Sustainable urban settlements on the territory of Odessa city exist since the V century BC. The first known inhabitants of this area were the ancient Greeks, in later periods the city Hadzhibey was founded on the site of modern Odessa, after the Russian Empire took control over the Hadzhibey it was renamed to Odessa.
